Regency Chronicle Reviews

The Regency Chronicle features in-depth curated reviews of historical books, dramas, podcasts, and merchandise, with a special focus on the Regency era. A Regency Chronicle review is a stamp of good quality. We do not publish reviews for books we cannot award 3 stars or more. Our reviews are not clickbait created for affiliate-$ earnings. We do not publish AI-generated reviews.

Our reviews are written by a three-woman team (and occasional guest reviewers) who love history and follow stringent in-house guidelines to ensure honest, unbiased, reader-focused reviewing to a consistent standard. We originally ran the Regency Chronicle as a print newsletter for a reading circle started by our editor Pam Baker, and are gradually adding our old print content to this website and establishing social media.

Submitting a book is no guarantee that we will review it. We reserve the right to accept or decline submitted books. If we do not review, that can be for many reasons, not least because there are only so many books our team can manage in any period.

Team members select from submitted books based on their interest and expertise profiles. Some reviewers are drama, audiobook, and podcast fans. They make their own choices about what they review. Sometimes more than one team member chooses to review a book, and we publish both on the respective book page.

Our Ratings System

We compare like to like within relevant sub-genres. We allocate points in increments of .25 pts, weighing these criteria to calculate our overall rating out of 5 stars:

  • Voice and Style
  • Characters and Plot
  • Period Authenticity
  • Merit within sub-genre
  • Quality of editing

5 stars – top 10% – unique and exceptional; outstanding across all criteria

4 stars plus– top 30% – generally excellent across all criteria

3 stars plus –  average to very good – some minor issues but overall, a book we recommend

1-2 stars – significant issues – not ready for prime time

0 stars – predominately AI generated content or significant plagiarized content

Historical Periods and Genres

  • Non-fiction on most topics within the 1700-1950 time frame.
  • Historical fiction from the same period, including romance, mystery, family saga, suspense, action & adventure, inspirational.
  • We have a special interest in Regency settings.

We do not review erotica or erotic romance.  We review same-sex romances set in the period between 1700-1950. Sometimes we review a book set before 1700. Some books are from reviewers’ personal collections.

Copyright in the book, movie, or merchandise is held by the author, creator, or distribution company. Reviews published by the Regency Chronicle are the copyright property of the review writer. Cover images used for promotional purposes are courtesy of the publisher/distributor.

Complete Impartiality – No Affiliate Relationships

Impartiality:  Our review team follows Regency Chronicle guidelines for honest, fair, informed, impartial reviews. Team members assert their right to express their own opinions within that framework. Reviewers do not receive payment for writing reviews of any book, movie, or other product.

Affiliate Relationships: We are not an affiliate of Amazon or any other retailer. Beyond receiving access to digital ARCs or PDFs  for review purposes, we have no material relationship with any author, publisher, creator, advertiser, or distributor. We made this choice to avoid conflict of interest.  Affiliate review businesses with good social media reach typically charge the author a promotion fee for an editorial review and, additionally, receive a percentage for each book sold via website links. It would be naïve to think ratings are not affected by cash incentives. Readers are unlikely to click on anything but a 4 or 5-star review, which is why the majority of books reviewed on affiliate sites are highly rated regardless of merit.

Welcome!

Thank you for visiting! In our former life, the Regency Chronicle was a snail mail circular created in 2015 by a group of friends who loved the Regency era, shared reviews, and got together occasionally. Over the years, we expanded our mailing list and our content until postage costs got the better of us  in 2020. In 2022, we decided to build this website and load all our past and current content.

We are proud to feature informed, impartial reviews of historical fiction, non-fiction, drama, podcasts, and wares. Do subscribe if you’d like to receive our monthly hit list in your inbox! Pam Baker, editor.
